A man in his early 30s (Keane) struggles with the supposed loss of his daughter from Port Authority bus terminal in New York, while fighting serious battles with schizophrenia. we can never be sure if the loss is real or imaginary; or whether his overt interest in helping young girls is innocent and of a fatherly nature, or is of a darker, scarier motive.



Keane is a searing portrayal of mental illness. Dominated by an intense tour de force performance by Damian Lewis of the titular character on screen in close-ups for the entire film, writer/director Lodge H. Kerrigan throws us into Keane's disturbed mind set from the get go, as we have to continually judge for ourselves what is his grip on reality. Through his mutterings and movements we see the world from his tormented perspective as he painfully re-lives what is either a trauma or a delusion, and ache with him as he self-medicates with booze and drugs. We alarmingly get to understand his mind even as we fear for his safety and others around him, particularly each time he drinks a beer.

The ambient sound design brilliantly captures Keane's highly stimulated perceptions and keeps us at the edge of our seats in agony as to what sound or sight could set him off. The ambient song selections are beautifully selected to heighten his emotions, including the 4 Tops' I Can't Help Myself. The film makes excellent use of realistic locations in New York and New Jersey with a gritty, very urban-sensitive cinematography.

Keane es la historia de William (Keane), un hombre aquejado de esquizofrenia, cuya vida diaria debate entre lo real y lo imaginario. Su existencia aunque recubierta de un halo gris e insípido es, ante todo, tormentosa: en el momento en que arranca la cinta se enfrenta a la desaparición de su hija pequeña. ¿Una desaparición real o sólo fruto de su imaginación? Esto es lo que debe descubrir a su lado el espectador.



Lodge Kerrigan met en scène la tragédie d’un homme, William Keane, dont la fillette a été enlevée dans une gare routière de New York. La première séquence le montre fiévreux, agité, revenant sur les lieux de l’enlèvement pour tenter d’y trouver un indice qui l’amènerait sur la piste du kidnappeur. Il parle tout seul, s’énerve, tente de trouver une logique à un acte qui en est, par essence, totalement dépourvu. Enfermé dans son désespoir, Keane tourne en rond (au propre comme au fi guré) et revient sans cesse, comme un aimant, sur le lieu du drame. La rencontre avec une mère seule et sa petite fi lle, d’abord réconfortante, ne va faire qu’aggraver les choses.
Lodge Kerrigan filme au plus près de son acteur principal, l’étonnant comédien anglais Damien Lewis, qui instille dans son jeu une pointe d’ambiguïté déroutante. Et soudain le doute s’installe. Et si le malheureux Keane n’était pas celui qu’il prétend être, s’il était fou, mythomane, ou assassin ? Quoi qu’il en soit, "Keane" montre la souffrance dans ce qu’elle a de plus pervers.



William Keane, un uomo di circa trenta anni vive a New York e si presenta alla polizia dicendo di aver perduto la sua figlioletta di sei anni al capolinea degli autobus. L'uomo ha dei disturbi mentali e nessuno riesce a capire se la sua storia sia vera o se abbia materializzato in questo modo il suo immenso bisogno di avere degli affetti e una famiglia. Comunque, sei mesi dopo, William deve fare i conti con la realtà e ricominciare a vivere accettando di non avere una figlia di cui prendersi cura. Conosce Kira una giovane ragazza-madre e inizia a frequentare sempre più assiduamente lei e sua figlia, senza raccontare loro nulla del suo passato. Quello che cerca è un nuovo punto di partenza.
